Description

Experienced dancer? Already familiar with the music, basic patterns, styling, and common moves in Cha Cha and Rumba? In these two workshops, you will learn to transform basic moves into powerful and dynamic demonstrations of your skills. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Turn up the intensity, passion, and style of moves you already. Adapt each move to suite your present partner.

Requirements

This is not a beginner-level class.
This class is for you if…

1. You already had a beginner-level class with either Darrell or Sarah, and…
   • You are familiar with our warm-up and balance exercises
   • You understand “Touchless Dancing”
   • You can successfully execute several different moves in several different dances
2. You have not had a beginner level class with either Darrell or Sarah, but…
   • You are familiar with bronze-level syllabus moves in American Style (Rhythm) Cha Cha and Rumba
   • You are ready for a faster-paced class that focuses on excellence in the use of your body for graceful and powerful Leading and Following

Format

Each workshop is ninety minutes

No Partner is required – expect numerous partner changes. Please see the Changing Partners FAQ and the Shoe FAQ.

Tuition

Each ninety-minute workshop:
– individuals: $10/person/workshop
– Drop-ins are permitted!

Thursday nights this summer, “have dinner” a different way! We will meet for 75 minutes on Thursdays, 9 June until 28 July, 2011.

Have some fun relaxing from your work week with a hot Salsa dance class designed for Intermediate level Salsa/Rhythm dancers. Pre-enrollment or advance registration is not necessary but is suggested; these are drop-in classes.

Learn energetic and sensual Rhythm dances like Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha, Argentine Tango, and Bolero. Before each class, we decide as a group what we would like to work on that night. This class is your “Sandbox”: a time to play and enjoy Salsa and other Rhythm dances! We will be working on:

• More involved Salsa/Rhythm combinations
• Drops
• Dips
• Solo work
• …maybe even some lifts!

The focus, as with all of our classes, is on how to come into contact with your partner safely and painlessly.

Since this is an Intermediate level class, I expect that you will already be familiar with basic Salsa/Rhythm dance concepts like cross-body leads, right side passes, under-arm turns, chases, and Cuban motion. You need to have been dancing with Darrell or myself for at least six (6) months. If you are unsure if you are ready for these classes, please do not hesitate to ask me! As always, the more the merrier!

Darrell is also teaching Salsa/Latin II this summer, an eight-week class series, which will focus more heavily on syllabus dancing. These two classes will compliment each other very nicely!

Please, no Street Shoes on the dance floor. Dance shoes, practice shoes, dance sneakers, or stocking feet are all fine.

Neil Hollingworth will be our guest instructor on Saturday, June 11th for a great educational dance experience teaching both the basics and special techniques in Swing. You won’t want to miss this great opportunity (especially with the Hangar Dance one week later!) to improve your technique and increase your fun with Swing! Neil is an expert instructor and well known for his skill as a professional dancer and instructor.

USA Dance–Madison is the area’s newest ballroom dance club. USA Dance is a national non-profit organization that promotes ballroom dancing. USA Dance-Madison is a local chapter (#2095) of that national organization. The Madison chapter offers dance workshops and intensives, and provide a positive smoke-free alcohol-free social dance every month.

Darrell’s much anticipated Ballroom II class picks up where your previous beginner-level classes left off. This class will cover more moves, styling, and technique in Waltz, Tango, and Fox Trot (American Style for all).

We will cover American Style Smooth dances in this class.

Description

Experienced dancer? Already familiar with the music, basic patterns, styling, and common moves in classic “Smooth” dances – Tango, Fox Trot, and Waltz? Learn greater power, energy exchange, and more refined partnering – as well as new moves requiring these skills – in these American Style Smooth dances. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will already know basic moves and be able to identify the music for four different dances – Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, and Merengue. Students will improve their good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection/partnering. Students will recognize how those good habits are absolutely essential in the Leading and Following of moves, and how those good habits are what serve to make each dancer a welcome participant at any social or competitive ballroom dance event.

Requirements

Darrell’s much anticipated Salsa/Latin II class picks up where your previous beginner-level classes left off. In addition to covering more moves, styling, and technique in Salsa, this class will also build on your existing knowledge of Cha Cha, Rumba, Bolero, and Swing.

Though the course title says “Latin”, it is meant in the colloquial sense and is used to provide a sense of continuity from the similarly-named beginner-level course I teach for UW Continuing Studies. We will be covering American Style Rhythm dances in this class.

Join us for the first UWMBDA dance of the summer, in the glorious new Union South.

UWMBDA dances are a great opportunity to put all of your new dance moves to use! They are open to UW students and non-students. The DJ plays a mix of music that will include salsa, merengue, rumba, cha cha, waltz, fox trot, tango, swing, and many others!

Dress for UWMBDA dances is casual–jeans and a T-shirt are normal. Please bring non-street shoes to dance in!

If you have completed one of Darrell’s or Sarah’s recent classes, then this class is for you!

This Group Class will meet each Thursday from 7:30 – 8:45 pm, beginning 24 March 2011 and running until 5 May 2011, for a total of seven sessions.

In this 75-minute class meeting for a total of seven sessions, we build upon skills you know in Salsa and Merengue (and perhaps other dances you already know, like Rumba or Cha Cha). This class will use those skills to present Bolero (another Rhythm-style dance).

Students should be familiar with cuddles, hammerlocks, under-arm turns, and the movement-of and reaction-to space – these are skills that both Darrell and Sarah teach in their beginner/new dancer classes. You will continue to refine these skills in each more advanced class that you take. In addition to having greater mastery of these basic skills, by the end of class you will be very comfortable in Salsa, Merengue, and Cha Cha.

Along with partnering, musical interpretation, in-class performances (for the other class participants – optional, but encouraged), developing greater strength/balance/flexibility, movement technique, and unlocking your individual and combined creativity, course material will introduce topics such as light and shade, acceleration, using changes in elevation, delayed turns, dynamic power, shared weight, dips/tricks, and partner communication/sensitivity.

This class is designed for dancers who have some experience with partner dancing and will move at an appropriate pace.

Please, no Street Shoes on the dance floor. Dance shoes, dance sneakers, or stocking feet are all fine.
