Description

New and experienced dancers alike, learn to lead and follow with skill and confidence! Learn the music, basic patterns, styling, turns, and common moves for Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Cha Cha, Bolero, and other related partner dances. Beyond just steps and patterns, you will learn the movement and partnering principles needed for making any dance move possible. You will actually remember new dance moves and know how to apply them to many different dances. No dance experience required. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will know basic moves and be able to identify the music for at least four different dances – Merengue, Salsa, Rumba, and Cha Cha. Students will develop good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection. Students will recognize how those good habits help in the Leading and Following of moves, and how they also demonstrate respect for your dance partner and other dancers. In addition, students will understand the responsibilities and duties involved in skillful Leading and Following, as well as how to avoid collisions on a crowded dance floor.

Beyond just steps and patterns, class focuses on good form and function. You will learn the movement and partnering principles to unlock your individual style. No dance experience required. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will know basic moves and be able to identify the music for up to five different dances – Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, Swing, and Merengue. Students will develop good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection. Students will recognize how those good habits help in the Leading and Following of moves, and how they also demonstrate respect for your dance partner and other dancers. In addition, students will understand the responsibilities and duties involved in skillful Leading and Following, as well as how to avoid collisions on a crowded dance floor.

Our carpool leaves from the Dutch Mill Park and Ride lot located at Stoughton Road and the Beltline in Madison (map below) at 5:00pm sharp. We will take as many vehicles as we need to accommodate everyone, leaving the rest of the vehicles at the park and ride. Please bring gas money for drivers.

I have never attended the youth camp – intended for HS students – so I do not know first-person details about them. I suspect they are quite similar to the Adult Camp in quality. HS students may attend the adult camps, and each year I was there several HS students were participants.

Every summer, Brigham Young University in Provo, UT (50 miles south of Salt Lake City) hosts a Ballroom Dance Camp for Adults and a Ballroom Dance Camp for Youths.

Leads Needed

I am actively recruiting dancers to attend the BYU Adult Dance Camp this summer (29 July – 02 August 2013). Some Art of Dancers are already enrolled, but more want to attend. This year, Darrell is going too!

Here’s the thing, the camp tries to maintain an equal balance of Leads and Follows.

At this time [April], the organizers are no longer allowing individual women to enroll unless they enroll with a man at the same time. You do not need to be partners during the camp, and you will not be sharing a room. You just need to enroll at the same time.

Darrell will match any Art of Dance Lead to a Follow who already wants to go! Email Darrell. Men, please contact me so I can match you with a woman from Art of Dance who is already on the wait list (otherwise the camp organizers will take whomever is at the top of their wait list).

Adult Camp

The adult camp offers a full week of dance classes, social dances, performances, and full immersion into ballroom dancing. The access to quality instruction is superb, and the instructors are the very people who often judge at dance competitions and produce dance syllabus and training material.

Enrollment is limited to 250 participants. In the years I have attended, there have been about 30-40 participants under age 30, with most of the participants ages 40 and above.

The camp is attended by mostly amateur dancers, most of whom do not compete in dancing, but rather enjoy dancing as a great hobby. Classes are offered in beginner through advanced levels and are taught by skillful nationally (and internationally) prominent dancers and dance teachers.

Private lessons are available with any of the instructors. (Look at the website links, above in the white box, to see who is teaching.)

Costs

Tuition, on-campus housing (dorms, separated by gender), ground transportation from Salt Lake City airport to Provo, and meals:
- ~$750 per person double occupancy (see below)
- ~$845 per person single occupancy (see below)

Meals come as a $85 campus meal card that can be used at a variety of locations on campus. Ground transportation between SLC airport and Provo estimated at $70 per person round trip. Airfare is not included in the cost.
