Event Participation (a la carte)

Entry fees are assessed per entry (couple) not per person. For pro/am entries, the amateur is responsible for the entire entry fee. For amateur couples, the couples may split the entry fee. Each competitor must purchase the Competitor Pass.

Freestyle
A number of couples may be on the floor at the same time. You compete against others of your own skill level. Your event is not choreographed and you do not select the music.
$20 Amateur
$20 Pro/Am

Solos (choreographed)
You and your partner have the dance floor to yourself. You choreograph a part of a dance (Solo Audition) or the entire dance (Solo Routine) and receive brief written comments from the judges. You select your own music.
$30 Amateur
$30 Pro/Am

Multi-Dance
A number of couples may be on the floor at the same time. You dance three dances in succession.
Smooth: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot
Rhythm: Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing

Team Match
This is a group competition between dance schools. Individual scores are averaged within the school. The school with the highest average score is the team match winner. Two entries are included with Competitor Pass.

Rhythm / Latin
Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha, Mambo, Samba, Merengue, Bolero, Paso Doble

Hustle, West Coast Swing, Polka

Rules and Regulations

No lifts or drops allowed in any freestyle or multi-dance events.

No choreographed routines in any closed freestyle or multi-dance events.

Couples will be judged on the following: lead and follow skills, floor craft, creativity, originality, musical skills, and technique within the skill level entered.

An Amateur couple’s dance level mused be based on the lead’s knowledge and ability.

You may enter in two consecutive skill levels (ie. Associate Bronze and Full Bronze).

You may not enter in two age categories.

Carpool and Hotel information will appear here as soon as plans are finalized. You are certainly welcome to secure your own lodging with friends or relatives in the area.

The competition is an all-day event on Saturday. We will stay at a local hotel on Friday night prior to the competiton and Saturday night after the competition to assure we are well rested for the competition and for the return trip to Madison. We will share hotel rooms, keeping the cost for both nights as low as possible.

Travel and hotel information will appear here soon. If all goes well, budget for an additional $60 - $80 per person for travel and sleep arrangements. Having a hotel will be well-worth the extra cost. Plus, by arriving on Friday night, we can attend the Friday night social dance.

The information appearing above is subject to change and clarification without notice.

To participate in any available carpool, caravan, or other accommodations (if offered), you must register in advance. RSVP to Road Trips.

What are Dance Competitions?

Beginning with the Appleton Competition, the studio is taking a more robust approach to competition participation. This is similar to the way other dance studios handle competitions both small and large. Instead of dancing only a small number of entries per person, my goal is to have everyone dance as much as possible.

I know that entering competitions looks expensive - the numbers add up quickly. In fact, these prices are quite competitive. Where other studios and dance teachers add a sizable surcharge per dance for each pro/am event, I do not. I want you out there dancing! I want to dance with you. I know money is a consideration for most people, and I would like your dollars to get you as much time on the dance floor as possible.

In addition to the per-dance surcharge I just described, other instructors often charge “lost time” for attending (and traveling to) competitions - four to eight hours of private lesson time per day the teacher is at the comp dancing with students. At first glance, that may seem unreasonable, but economic pressures play a role - the teacher could have stayed home and booked private lessons instead of participating in the comp with the amateur. (Teachers have bills to pay and businesses to operate, of course.)

The teacher also has hotel, meal, transportation, and admissions costs to cover related to attending the comp. Those costs are split between all competitors entering the comp with the teacher. (So if the teacher enters with 10 students, those costs are divided by 10 or somehow prorated between those students. Having more students means each student is responsible for a smaller share of that cost.)

When determining your total cost for Appleton, factor in your transportation, hotel, admissions package, and any meals not covered by the Competitor Pass.

If you are dancing with Darrell or Amanda, also expect to pay a portion of the hotel, meal, transportation, and admission costs for Darrell or Amanda. Having more competitors means less teacher cost per competitor.

In the past, I have absorbed the cost of hotel snafus, my admission charges, fuel, etc. It is not practical for me to do that into the future. I am still dedicated to introducing you to as much delight in your dancing as I possibly can, but I need to watch the bottom line.

Since Appleton is a smaller comp, the package prices are priced accordingly. For WI State - a much larger competition with much higher entry fees, the packages will also be priced accordingly.

Reader Comments

Participating in the Appleton competition was great! The competition involves people of all skill levels. It is very encouraging to watch the new dancers. It makes you think back to when you were in their shoes, and gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you realize that your skill and ability has increased tremendously since you first started out. It is also quite motivating to watch the dancers who are far more skilled than you. It gives you something to work toward, and all their beautiful costumes make you want to go out shopping. Finally, the scores and feed back you receive from the judges gives you a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses so you can work on improving your dancing.
