Pick up where your previous beginner-level class left off, and continue to develop you own personal style and mastery of American Style Smooth technique. This class emphasizes excellence in form, posture, partnering, and connection.

In addition to covering exciting and socially-leadable moves, you will learn how to own your moves, better read your partners, and produce exciting dancing!

This class will also build on your existing knowledge of Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz.
We will cover American Style Smooth dances in this class.

Participants from my “Ballroom” beginner-level UW Continuing Studies courses are welcome to enroll in this class.

Goals

Students will already know basic moves and be able to identify the music for up to four different dances – Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, and Viennese Waltz. Students will improve their good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection/partnering. Students will recognize how those good habits are absolutely essential in the Leading and Following of moves, and how those good habits are what serve to make each dancer a welcome participant at any social or competitive ballroom dance event.

Each class period is two-hours, consisting of 90 minutes of instruction time followed by 30 minutes of guided practice time (where Darrell is available to help and answer questions).

Continue building on material from Summer Ballroom II. Refine your more advanced moves in Waltz, learn more Viennese Waltz, and American Tango. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will already know basic moves and be able to identify the music for four different dances – Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, and Merengue. Students will improve their good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection/partnering. Students will recognize how those good habits are absolutely essential in the Leading and Following of moves, and how those good habits are what serve to make each dancer a welcome participant at any social or competitive ballroom dance event.

Format

Each class period is two-hours, consisting of 90 minutes of instruction time followed by 30 minutes of guided practice time (where Darrell is available to help and answer questions). Class will occur on two Saturdays.

Two two-hour sessions:
– individuals: $25/person
– couples: $40/two people

Description

Develop “Hip Action” and “Knee Action”, learn about rotational isolations, and break a sweat while doing it. Latin Drills provides a framework for allowing your body to teach you how to move efficiently, with power and safety. Experience with Rhythm/Latin dances is preferred but not required. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will learn about “Rotational Hip Action” (ie Cuban Motion), arm styling, body isolations, balance, and purposeful movement through a series of drills. These drills will incorporate many “moves” from dances like Salsa, Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, and Bolero,

Format

Each class period is two-hours (with breaks). Class will occur on two Saturdays.

Tuition

Two two-hour sessions:
– individuals: $25/person
– couples: $40/two people
No Partner is required. Much of the class period will focus on solo work (without a partner).

Description

Continue learning more moves in Salsa/Mambo, Merengue, Rumba, and Hustle, plus add Cha Cha! Beyond just steps and patterns, you will learn the movement and partnering principles needed for making any dance move possible. You will actually remember new dance moves and know how to apply them to many different dances. No dance experience required. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will learn additional moves in Salsa, Merengue, and Rumba, as well as learning Cha Cha and more Hustle. Students will develop good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection. Students will recognize how those good habits help in the Leading and Following of moves, and how they also demonstrate respect for your dance partner and other dancers. In addition, students will understand the responsibilities and duties involved in skillful Leading and Following, as well as how to avoid collisions on a crowded dance floor.

Format

Each class period is ninety-minutes. Class will occur on three Thursdays.

We will be offering three workshops over UW’s Spring Break:

Tuesday (4:30 – 6:00): American Rhythm Technique
Thursday (6:00 – 7:30): Partnering and Connection (Rumba)
Thursday (7:30 – 9:00): Dips and Tricks

These workshops are for you if…
    You have completed one of Darrell’s or Sarah’s recent classes, including but not limited to UW Summer 2009, UW Fall 2009, Salsa/Latin 102, New Dancer American Rhythm, Fox Trot 101, or Salsa 101.
    Or if you are presently taking Darrell’s Salsa/Latin 103 or UW Winter/Spring 2010; or Sarah’s Rumba 101.

These workshops are also open to friends of the studio who have previously taken classes with either Darrell or Sarah. Students should be familiar with cuddles, hammerlocks, under-arm turns, and the movement-of and reaction-to space – these are skills that both Darrell and Sarah teach in their beginner/new-dancer classes. Come to any or all workshops, and bring your friends!

American Rhythm Technique

Held at: State Street Center (122 State St), 3rd Floor Studio

Description:
We will work to develop the full-body Cuban motion that is part of every American-style Rhythm dance (cha cha / rumba / swing / bolero / mambo). Developing good technique will help set your dancing apart, and allow you to effortlessly stand out on the floor! Topics covered may include: hip and core motion, foot placement and turnout, arm styling, upper-body motion, and posture.

Partnering and Connection (Rumba)

Taught by: Sarah Calhoun

Time: Thursday, 1 April 2010 (6:00 – 7:30)

Held at: Kanopy Dance

Description: A strong connection can take your dancing from good to fantastic! We will be working specifically on Rumba, though these same principles are portable to all other dances. Discovering how you hold your own body and how it interacts with a partner will change the way you dance forever!

The class will emphasize creating a solid constant connection between the lead and follow and how to use that connection throughout the entire dance and in every move that we create! In addition to Rumba technique, we will be learning how two bodies create motion together.

Dips and Tricks

Taught by: Sarah Calhoun

Time: Thursday, 1 April 2010 (7:30 – 9:00)

Held at: Kanopy Dance

Description:
Learn some socially leadable and FUN and FLASHY dips and tricks to use at your next dance gathering! Along with partnering, we will work on musical interpretation, in-class performances (for the other class participants – optional, but encouraged), developing greater strength/balance/flexibility, movement technique, and unlocking your individual and combined creativity.

Please, no Street Shoes on the dance floor. Dance shoes, dance sneakers, or stocking feet are all fine.

What to Expect

Who is this for?

The Wedding Special is designed for couples, meaning the engaged couple, their parents, grandparents, and members of the wedding party, regardless of past dance experience. Same sex couples are welcome.

How should your prepare…

Give yourself at least two months prior to your reception. The more time you give yourself, the better your first dance will be.

Will six lessons be enough?

Every couple learns differently, though six lessons is the magic number for many couples. Additional lesson packages are always available.
