Road Trip

Indiana Challenge is a large amateur, pro/am, and professional competition. Darrell and Sarah began competing together at Indiana Challenge just a few years ago! Competitors come from across the country to compete here. Shop numerous vendors for dance shoes, all manner of accessories, clothes, and dance costumes.

Bring your camera for still photography – shooting video is strictly prohibited.

Carpool

Drivers will be provided an allowance for tolls and fuel.
Our carpool departs from the Dutch Mill Park and Ride lot in Madison, WI (located at Stoughton Road and the Beltine) – map below – leaving Madison promptly at 3pm.

Event Dates

UWMBDA dances are a great opportunity to put all of your new dance moves to use! Dances are open to UW students and non-students. The DJ plays a mix of recorded music that includes Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Cha Cha, Waltz, Fox Trot, Tango, Swing, and many others!

See the UWMBDA website for the specific locations, times, admission prices, and other details of each dance.

Dress for UWMBDA dances is casual–jeans and a T-shirt are normal.
Please bring a separate pair of non-street shoes to wear for dancing!

Event Dates

USA Dance–Madison is hosts social ballroom dances, workshops, and other events that are open to all dancers, regardless of where you take lessons.

USA Dance is a national non-profit organization that promotes ballroom dancing. USA Dance-Madison is the local chapter (#2095) of that national organization. The Madison chapter offers dance workshops and intensives, and provide a positive smoke-free alcohol-free social dance every month.

USA Dance social dances are a great opportunity to put all of your dance moves into action! The mix of recorded music includes Waltz, Fox Trot, Tango, Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Cha Cha, Swing, and many others!

Dress for USA Dance dances is dressy casual.

Join Darrell and/or Sarah for the Art of Dance monthly Cardinal Bar Field Trip. This is a time to go out dancing with your Art of Dance friends!

The Cardinal Bar (just East of Capitol Square) has a newly remodeled dance floor. Salsa Night (Thursday night) usually attracts a big crowd. Get there early for the most dancing (and the most room on the dance floor).

Check their website and call the club with any specific questions.

The dress for club dancing is whatever you want to wear. You may want to wear rubber-soled dance sneakers (vs your good suede-bottom dance shoes) since this is primarily a bar/club and not a social ballroom dance event.

In addition to covering exciting and socially-leadable moves, you will learn how to own your moves, better read your partners, and produce exciting dancing!

This class will also build on your existing knowledge of Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz.
We will cover American Style Smooth dances in this class.

Participants from my “Ballroom” beginner-level UW Continuing Studies courses are welcome to enroll in this class.

Experienced dancer? Already know the basics for several dances? Learn greater power, energy exchange, and more refined partnering – as well as new moves requiring these skills – in American Style Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Students will already know basic moves and be able to identify the music for up to four different dances – Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, and Viennese Waltz. Students will learn or further develop their Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. Students will improve their good dance habits, emphasizing the importance of posture, frame, and connection/partnering. Students will recognize how those good habits are absolutely essential in the Leading and Following of moves, and how those good habits are what serve to make each dancer a welcome participant at any social or competitive ballroom dance event.

Requirements

This is not a beginner-level class.
This class is for you if…

1. You already had a beginner-level class with either Darrell or Sarah, and…
   • You are familiar with our warm-up and balance exercises
   • You understand “Touchless Dancing”
   • You can successfully execute several different moves in several different dances
2. You have not had a beginner level class with either Darrell or Sarah, but…
   • You are familiar with bronze-level syllabus moves in several Rhythm dances
   • You are ready for a faster-paced class that focuses on excellence in the use of your body for graceful and powerful Leading and Following

Format

Each class period is two-hours, consisting of 90 minutes of instruction time followed by 30 minutes of guided practice time (where Darrell is available to help and answer questions).

Event Dates

Darrell is teaching the pre-dance Cha Cha lesson at the Saturday, 24 March 2012 dance!

AoD students: This is a great place to go and practice what we’ve been working on, and to meet other students of dance. I have been to the dance in Belvidere many times and enjoy it for not only its beautiful venue (newly redecorated!) but for the energy, enthusiasm, and welcoming environment provided by the many people who attend. I usually expect to see over 100 people at the dance!

Doors for the 4th Saturday dance open at 6:45 PM with the lesson starting at 7:00 PM. The 4th Saturday dance is held every month and includes a group lesson from local professional ballroom dance instructors and generally includes a mid-evening showcase put on by the evenings instructor, the instructors’s students or other members of the local ballroom dance community. In addition we have one or two dance mixers as part of the evenings schedule.

Belvidere is only a few tolls into IL, just past the familiar “Belvidere Oasis” freeway overpass convenience station. It only takes about an hour & fifteen minutes to get there from Madison, and it is well worth the journey!

5:00pm sharp: Carpool meets (see below)
7-8pm: Group dance lesson
8-11pm: Social Dance

Our carpool meets at the Dutch Mill Park and Ride lot located at Stoughton Road and the Beltline in Madison (map below) at 5:00pm sharp. We will take as many vehicles as we need to accommodate everyone, leaving the rest of the vehicles at the park and ride. Please bring gas and toll money for drivers.
