Road Trip

Indiana Challenge is a large amateur, pro/am, and professional competition. Darrell and Sarah began competing together at Indiana Challenge just a few years ago! Competitors come from across the country to compete here. Shop numerous vendors for dance shoes, all manner of accessories, clothes, and dance costumes.

Bring your camera for still photography – shooting video is strictly prohibited.

Carpool

Drivers will be provided an allowance for tolls and fuel.
Our carpool departs from the Dutch Mill Park and Ride lot in Madison, WI (located at Stoughton Road and the Beltine) – map below – leaving Madison promptly at 3pm.

Join Darrell and/or Sarah for the Art of Dance monthly Cardinal Bar Field Trip. This is a time to go out dancing with your Art of Dance friends!

The Cardinal Bar (just East of Capitol Square) has a newly remodeled dance floor. Salsa Night (Thursday night) usually attracts a big crowd. Get there early for the most dancing (and the most room on the dance floor).

Check their website and call the club with any specific questions.

The dress for club dancing is whatever you want to wear. You may want to wear rubber-soled dance sneakers (vs your good suede-bottom dance shoes) since this is primarily a bar/club and not a social ballroom dance event.

Darrell is teaching the pre-dance Cha Cha lesson at the Saturday, 24 March 2012 dance!

AoD students: This is a great place to go and practice what we’ve been working on, and to meet other students of dance. I have been to the dance in Belvidere many times and enjoy it for not only its beautiful venue (newly redecorated!) but for the energy, enthusiasm, and welcoming environment provided by the many people who attend. I usually expect to see over 100 people at the dance!

Doors for the 4th Saturday dance open at 6:45 PM with the lesson starting at 7:00 PM. The 4th Saturday dance is held every month and includes a group lesson from local professional ballroom dance instructors and generally includes a mid-evening showcase put on by the evenings instructor, the instructors’s students or other members of the local ballroom dance community. In addition we have one or two dance mixers as part of the evenings schedule.

Belvidere is only a few tolls into IL, just past the familiar “Belvidere Oasis” freeway overpass convenience station. It only takes about an hour & fifteen minutes to get there from Madison, and it is well worth the journey!

5:00pm sharp: Carpool meets (see below)
7-8pm: Group dance lesson
8-11pm: Social Dance

Our carpool meets at the Dutch Mill Park and Ride lot located at Stoughton Road and the Beltline in Madison (map below) at 5:00pm sharp. We will take as many vehicles as we need to accommodate everyone, leaving the rest of the vehicles at the park and ride. Please bring gas and toll money for drivers.

Where the Hell is Matt is coming to Madison!

I’m coming to Madison to include it in my new dancing video. This is an invitation to come out and join me.

In this new video, I’m actually learning how to dance, so I’ll be showing some easy moves and asking people to follow along. But don’t worry. I’m still not very good at dancing so you don’t have to be perfect either. Just remember to smile and have fun.

Sorry for the very short notice, especially for those of you who may want to come from far away. I have been traveling across the US for these past few weeks and I’m struggling to keep ahead of my schedule between all the driving and the dancing.

Meet-up Info:
When you get to the spot, look for the guy who looks like the guy in the dancing video. Just come on over, say hello, and ask if I am Matt. If I’m not Matt, I will let you know.

Before we dance, I will need to get your legal permission to appear in the video. I’ll shout some legal-sounding stuff on camera and you can just nod and give me a thumbs up if you’re okay with it. Kids under 18, please bring a parent or guardian, or at least bring a photo of one of their thumbs to hold up (just kidding, don’t do that).

I can’t guarantee the clip we shoot will end up in the final video. There will be a lot of footage to choose from and some of it will not be used.

Wearing distinctive clothing will make it easier to spot yourself in the video, but please do not dress as a licensed character (Mario, Spider-Man, Sarah Palin) or I will have to blur you and that will make everyone think you showed up naked or something. Also, please do not show up naked.

After the event, I’ll be selling shirts and books. The T-shirt says “I Danced With Matt” (so you’ll have proof) and the book is about the travels that went into making the previous “Where the Hell is Matt?” videos. Everything is $15. Cash only, please. You can also view and order both items here:

You’re welcome to bring your own camera. After the shoot, I’ll stick around for as long as anyone is waiting. I’m happy to dance with you in your own picture/video, so don’t hesitate to ask, but I do request that you wait until we’re finished shooting because I’ll be very busy until then.

If you can, please click “I’m Attending” on Facebook if you plan to attend, so we have a rough idea of how many dancers to expect. If you’re not on Facebook, don’t worry about it. You’re not missing anything.

We’re planning to put the final video up on the Internet before the end of 2011.

I know a lot of you are nowhere near Madison. I can only put together so many of these events, so I pick the cities where I’ve received the most emails and I try to invite people to the event that’s closest to them. I will also be dancing in Minneapolis, Detroit, and Cleveland, so if you’d prefer to go to one of those events, let us know and we’ll send you the invite.

A lot of the people on this list are in Chicago, so you may be wondering why I’m skipping such a big city. The reason is simply that I used it in the last video and got a great and memorable shot there, so I want to include more new places.

I’m trying to include all sorts of dances with all kinds of groups this time, so if you or someone you know is part of a dance group that is willing to meet up and perform with me, please reply to this email and let me know. I may not be able to set something up on this visit, but if it’s a really great opportunity I may try to get in touch with you later on.

Please understand, though: this a pretty big planet we live on, and my schedule won’t allow me to meet up with everyone, as much as I’d like it to, so I won’t be able to respond to every idea.

Sarah is leaving in the middle of July for a one-year library position at Yale University, and wants to bid farewell to her Madison dance family. As the French know, “farewell” is not a permanent state, but is only “until the re-seeing” (au re-voir). Come “see her until next time” in a proper dance fashion: on the dance floor! This will be the second of two “au revoir” dances, the first being at the West Coast Swing dance at the Badger Bowl on Wednesday night.
