Every summer, Brigham Young University in Provo, UT (50 miles south of Salt Lake City) hosts a Ballroom Dance Camp for Adults and a Ballroom Dance Camp for Youths.

Many years ago for several consecutive years, I attended the adult camp and had a fantastic time. Not only is the access to quality instruction superb, but the instructors are the very people who often judge at the competitions Sarah and I attend.

Adult Camp
    23-27 July 2012
    Registration begins Wednesday, 01 February, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. MT.

Youth Camp
    30 July – 02 August 2012
    Girls & Boys ages 10-18
    Registration begins Wednesday, 01 February, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. MT.

The adult camps offer a full week of dance classes, social dances, performance, and full immersion into ballroom dancing. The organizers limit enrollment to ~250 participants. In the years I have attended, there have been about 30 participants under age 30, with most of the participants ages 40 and above.

The camp is attended by mostly amateur dancers, most of whom do not compete in dancing, but rather enjoy dancing as a great hobby. Classes are offered in beginner through advanced levels and are taught by skillful nationally (and internationally) prominent dancers and dance teachers.

Private lessons are available with any of the instructors. (Look at the website links, above in the white box, to see who is teaching.)

I have never attended the youth camps – intended for HS students – so I do not know first-person details about them. I suspect they are quite similar to the adult camps in quality. HS students may attend the adult camps, and each year I was there several HS students were participants.

Description

Experienced dancer? Already familiar with the music, basic patterns, styling, and common moves in Cha Cha and Rumba? In these two workshops, you will learn to transform basic moves into powerful and dynamic demonstrations of your skills. No partner needed. Dress comfortably for a movement class.

Goals

Turn up the intensity, passion, and style of moves you already. Adapt each move to suite your present partner.

Requirements

This is not a beginner-level class.
This class is for you if…

  1. You already had a beginner-level class with either Darrell or Sarah, and…
    • You are familiar with our warm-up and balance exercises
    • You understand “Touchless Dancing”
    • You can successfully execute several different moves in several different dances
  2. You have not had a beginner level class with either Darrell or Sarah, but…
    • You are familiar with bronze-level syllabus moves in American Style (Rhythm) Cha Cha and Rumba
    • You are ready for a faster-paced class that focuses on excellence in the use of your body for graceful and powerful Leading and Following

Format

Each workshop is ninety minutes

No Partner is required – expect numerous partner changes. Please see the Changing Partners FAQ and the Shoe FAQ.

Tuition

Each ninety-minute workshop:
– individuals: $10/person/workshop
– Drop-ins are permitted!

Payment is possible by cash or check (made payable to “Darrell Dieringer”). If needed, Paypal can be arranged.

Kanopy dance studio is located in Downtown Madison on State Street. Nearby parking is available in the Overture Center Parking Ramp and the Capitol Parking Ramp.

The studio is located on the second floor above the Gap clothing store. The door to enter the studio is to the left of the Gap.

Neil Hollingworth will be our guest instructor on Saturday, June 11th for a great educational dance experience teaching both the basics and special techniques in Swing. You won’t want to miss this great opportunity (especially with the Hangar Dance one week later!) to improve your technique and increase your fun with Swing! Neil is an expert instructor and well known for his skill as a professional dancer and instructor.

USA Dance–Madison is the area’s newest ballroom dance club. USA Dance is a national non-profit organization that promotes ballroom dancing. USA Dance-Madison is a local chapter (#2095) of that national organization. The Madison chapter offers dance workshops and intensives, and provide a positive smoke-free alcohol-free social dance every month.

The MAC is easily accessible (less than 10 miles from Univ Ave) with plenty of free and well-lighted parking.

The MAC is a multi-use sports center complete with locker rooms and showers. The MAC complex includes two separate dance studios. The one we will use is fabulous – 1600 square feet of beautiful real hardwood.

From the Beltline, take Hwy 18/151 (Verona Road) South.
Exit at Hwy PB / M (exit number 79).
Turn left on Hwy PB and continue to the four-way stop.
Turn right on Hwy M and cross the bridge over the freeway.
Turn left on Praire Heights Drive (the first left after crossing over the freeway).
The MAC is the first building on the left – you are there!
