There is a heavier emphasis on salsa and partner dancing from about 10:30 - 12:30. After that, there is more reggaeton and nightclub dancing. It is also a bar, so make sure you don’t wear your good shoes!

I have been to the dance in Belvidere many times and enjoy it for not only its beautiful venue but for the energy, enthusiasm, and welcoming environment provided by the many people who attend. There are usually over 100 people at the dance!

Learn energetic, exciting, and passionate Latin dances like the rumba, cha cha, and salsa. In this class, perfect for beginners and experienced dancers, we cover turns, spins, style, and basic common patterns for several Latin dances, as well as challenges in balance, speed, flexibility, body awareness, and expression for more advanced dancers. No dance experience or partner required.

Intermediate and Beginner lessons are usually held at 6:00 and 7:00, respectively (free for UWMBDA members, $5 for non-members). General dancing usually starts at 8:00 ($2 for members, $4 for non-members). Check the UWMBDA webpage for more details.

Dress for UWMBDA dances is casual–jeans and a T-shirt are normal. Please bring non-street shoes to dance in!

This Group Class will meet each Thursday from 6:00 - 7:15 pm beginning 4 September 2008 and running until 9 October 2008, for a total of six sessions.

In this 75-minute class meeting for a total of six sessions, we will explore and develop two swing styles: East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing. While both have their roots in the explosion of Jazz music in the 1920s, they have developed in very different ways and have their own distinct stylings.

You will learn energetic, fluid, compact (and sometimes sultry!) swing dancing featuring many spins, turns, and changes of place. In addition, we will work with musicality and explore ways to hear and interpret swing music–from big band to pop!

The class will emphasize creating a solid constant connection between the lead and follow and how to use that connection throughout the entire dance and in every move that we create!

This class assumes participants have little to no experince with leading, following, partner dancing in general (swing dancing specifically) and will move at a pace appropriate for New Dancers.

You do not need to enroll with a partner. Expect frequent partner changes and numerous group activities and exercises.

This Group Class will meet each Friday from 5:30 - 6:45 pm, beginning 5 September 2008 and running until 12 October 2008, for a total of six sessions.

In this 75-minute class meeting for a total of six sessions, we will develop advanced leading / following principles, and learn how to use those principles to invent exciting moves.

We will work mainly, though not exclusively, in the context of American Style Rhythm (cha cha / rumba / swing / bolero / mambo). The partnering and interpretation principles are appropriate for every style of partner dancing (Smooth / Standard / Rhythm / Latin).

The focus will be primarily on partnering, musical interpretation, in-class performances (for the other class participants), movement technique, and unlocking your individual and combined creativity. Course material may include topics such as light and shade, acceleration, using changes in elevation, delayed turns, dynamic power, shared weight, lifts, sensitivity, etc.

Improve your own balance and learn to recognize how each partner influences the balance of the other. Develop an understanding of how you move your own body and how those movements are felt and interpreted by your partner. (Applies to leads and follows alike.) Build the fundamentals for creating good partner connections and for leading and following well. Exercise those fundamentals to invent your own moves!

This class is designed for dancers who have had experience with partner dancing, and will move at an appropriate pace. Enroll to improve your sense of partner connection and refine your body action and basics…and develop some of your own flashy moves!

You should plan to enroll with a partner (a friend / neighbor / roommate / romantic partner / dance partner) as the class material will be heavily geared toward creating interesting dancing with a partner. If you have no partner but would still like to enroll, you are encouraged to contact Sarah, since there may be other people without a partner who would also like to take this class.

In this 75-minute class meeting for a total of six sessions, we will discover how to produce many of the common dance moves you see at nightclubs where people dance Salsa.

We will be working with the Miami or Cubano style of Salsa, featuring many turns and spins for both the leads and the follows. Building on a simple set of common moves, we will continue to explore good lead and follow connections, inventiveness, and fluidity in Salsa dancing.

Many people begin going to Salsa clubs and using their new skills after only two or three sessions! Yes, it is possible to learn enough about Salsa dancing to have a lot of fun very quickly.
