Hello Dancers,
What kind or kinds of classes or workshops would you like to see Darrell and/or Sarah teach? Classes would meet for a number of weeks (6 weeks minimum) and Workshops on a one-time or limited-time basis. Our prices will be approximately $10/person/class hour, with incentives for enrolling with friends or partners.
Leave specific comments at the bottom of this page. Please include the reasons why you might enjoy the class/workshop.
We will offer additional price incentives or Art of Dance Merchandise for everyone who leaves a thoughtful and robust comment and then enrolls in any class or workshop.
We have a number of ideas…
(1) Competition Prep Class: We could start preparing for smaller showcase-like competitions like Appleton in March, Sun Prairie in June, and Rockford in November. We could prepare for larger NDCA-sanctioned competitions like the Indiana Challenge in February, WI State Dancesport Championships in April, or Harvest Moon in October (and several others). The larger and smaller comps differ not in the dancing or even the entry fees, but rather in the costumes and in the distance competitors travel in order to compete. NDCA-sanctioned comps tend to have more robust competition since competitors are willing to travel a greater distance to compete.
(2) Latin/Salsa 101.5 Class: This class – intended for anyone who has taken between ten and fifteen weeks of a beginner-level (a 101) class from either Darrell or Sarah – will pick up at a place where the previous class left off. Realize that after successfully completing a beginner-level cass, you are still a beginning dancer. However, you have a solid partner dance foundation. This means you are able to learn and to understand more material more quickly in the next class you take, which is a great thing!
(3) Flashy Moves Workshop: This workshop – intended for dancers with at least one year of dance experiene who regularly take lessons and attend social events – would focus on safe dips and drops for social dancing, as well as a few lifts for performance purposes.
(4) One Set of Cool Moves Workshop: This workshop – useful for new dancers and for experienced dancers who wish to apply skills from one dance to other dances – would focus on a set of moves that could be used in Salsa, Rumba, Hustle, Swing, Nightclub Two Step, Merengue, and Cha Cha.
(5) Leading and Following Skills Workshop: This workshop – useful for new dancers and for experienced dancers who wish to add more variety and improvisation to their dancing – would focus on how to communicate intention, how to react to changing space, how to lead and follow turns, how to match skills with your parter, and how to avoid collisions on the dance floor.
(6) Social Dance Etiquette Workshop: Focusing less on any particular dance genre or set of skills, and more on how to be a Good Lead and Good Follow, this workshop will present challenges and exercises in self discipline that allow both Leads and Follows to respectfully react to each other, to understand appropriate dance positions, and to be a welcome addition to any social dance scene. Good social dancing is about how you interact with other dancers and how you contribute to your local social dance scene.
Additional incentives are available for everyone who leaves a thoughtful and robust comment about your experiences in one of the classes you have taken with Darrell or Sarah. Please include why you are interested in a particular class/workshop. If you have another idea for a class/workshop, please include that too.
Each instructor at the Art of Dance is independent and sets his or her own prices. See Prices for all available private lesson packages. See Group Classes for all avaialable classes. Lesson packages and group class enrollments are not transferable. Limitations may apply. Please see the FAQ and read the studio's Policies.

I like number 5 (and 6).. leading and following. I would like to feel more comfortable dancing with experienced dancers – as it is, I always get lost once they try to lead me into something I’ve never done before (since I don’t know much, that happens all the time). So if I learned how to follow better.. or had some strategy as to what to do in these cases (other than just standing there, frozen, looking sheepishly) that would be great.

Darrell and Sarah: how exciting to see your contemplation of further classes and workshops. I place two votes: first to #2: Latin/Salsa 101.5 (would you allow in the 101.25s, though?). Additionally, both workshops 4 and 5 seem very profitable. Being provided an opportunity to more directly transfer knowledge between dances (workshop #4) is a great incentive as a “shortcut” in learning.
Workshop 5, Leading and Following, sounds like an ego booster and confidence builder. Either would be a great winter day/evening engagement. Of course, an opportunity to make leisurely application an hour after the workshop would be a great enticement…
